They're pretty good........................ if you've never heard a large 2-way Altec before.

I got a pair from a good buddy(the local Mc dealer) since he could let me have them at a price that was pretty much a gift.

    I tried to love them.

They indeed have plenty of the Altec magic at lower levels. But, there's no way in hell their frequency response is as broad and flat as claimed. They will fool you at first. Down low, you'll swear you hear 416-like bass. But, by the time you get a few watts in them, that feeling is gone. I have also come to the personal conclusion that when paired with a 12 or 15 inch Altec woofer, the phenolic ring tweeter is the next best thing to "why bother?". They should have used the same horn as in the Bolero, but that might have left too little difference in character between the 2 speaker systems

I would strongly recommend the Bolero over either version of the Santana. But, that's just me.

i could see how it would lose bass response. so basicaly they sound good if you pair them with a 15" woofer and and a horn. so really best suited for background dinner music. maybe if i run across a pair local at a decent price i'll check them out. thanks tom.

It's all about that entry fee, i'd strongly encourage you to try them if a reasonable pair comes within range.

Some SET guys are quite fond of that 420, and i understand why. At their power levels, what the 420 does, it does quite well, and probably offers a big advantage by keeping any kind of electronic crossover network out of the critical mid range.
